Highlights

In 2017, the production of lighting fixtures in the EU17 countries registered an increase of 3.1%, reaching a total value of EUR 11,474 million. As for consumption, a total value of EUR 15 billion was recorded in the Europe 17 countries during 2017 (+2.2% compared to 2016). Growth has been by +2.9% and +1.8%, respectively, in the consumer and in the professional market.

Lighting fixtures market has grown by 10% in the LED segment, while sales of conventional lighting sources contracted by 10%. Market share rose for Philips Lighting (from 7.7% to 9.2% between 2012 and 2017), Osram, Fagerhult, Eglo, Trilux, Briloner, Trio, and Linea Light.

Average EBITDA in the lighting fixtures industry in the EU17 countries is around 9%. The companies that top the ranking in term of the profitability of employed capital (ROI) were Dextra Group (UK), Antares (ES), Foscarini (IT), Whitecroft Lighting (UK), Disano (IT), Malmbergs Elektriska (SE), Glamox (NO), Dialight (UK), F.W. Thorpe (UK), Lival (FI), Normagrup (ES), Delta Light (BE), Sg Armaturen (NO), and Leds C4 (ES). In term of revenues, the top 10 players in the European lighting fixtures arena were Philips Lighting, Zumtobel, Trilux, Fagerhult, Schréder, Eglo, Iguzzini, Glamox, and Feilo Sylvania.

In 2017, the value of exports reached EUR 10.6 billion, registering an increase of 4.7% compared to the previous year. Imports of lighting fixtures in Europe was worth EUR 14.2 billion in 2017, with a growth of 3.3% compared to 2016.

The best performing segments were: weather resistant lighting, horticulture lighting, street lighting, lighting for major infrastructure projects, and lighting controls. As far as concern distribution system, a growth was reported for the Project and the E-Commerce channels.

A breaking news of the 2018 edition of “The European market for lighting fixtures” is a retrospective assessment on the past 30 years' of the lighting fixtures industry and a focus on the new technologies that will impact the upcoming ten.
