Abstract

Of the globe' s 6.68 billion people, 3.3 billion (or 49.4%) of the world' s population now have a mobile phone compared to 1.3 billion fixed line phones. In many countries, mobile phones far outnumber landline subscribers, and the gap is expected to widen over time. In fact, fixed landlines are also being replaced by "fixed" wireless units that have the ability to roam within a service provider' s footprint, further increasing the proposition for wireless technology.

The opportunity for tapping the next 3 billion people (and growing) is clear for the next 10 years; however, one significant challenge is in how to implement solutions to enable mobile usage for populations that reside in rural and more remote locations.

An increasing part of the solution is satellite backhaul. In low density areas, satellite is the best (if not the only) practical, available and cost-effective platform to implement a communications and digital divide solution. As governments around the globe begin to more seriously implement Universal Access requirements, operators that want to continue serving lucrative urban markets will be obligated to likewise service low population density markets.

Another and perhaps more compelling reason for bridging the communications divide is that as competition in the lucrative urban and suburban areas intensifies, as well as increasing saturation in the most sought-after markets develops, growth in the mobile market will be driven by an increased focus on rural markets.

Several elements need to be considered in establishing growth patterns in potentially lucrative rural markets, including disposable income, regulatory environments and infrastructure development, among others. Rural electrification for instance needs to increase in order to provide power to base stations.

These and other aspects of the satellite backhaul market are assessed in this latest NSR study. NSR addresses the general and region-specific market trends and the role satellite-based backhaul platform can play. NSR likewise examines the interplay of wireless technologies that affect the value proposition and corresponding penetration level per wireless platform.

Specific satellite BTS forecasts for wireless technology platforms are provided per region, which provide a road map of sorts in judging which technology platforms are likely to be deployed in specific regions of the globe in order to ascertain where satellite-backhaul equipment and services fit over the long term. The evolution or move towards an all-IP platform in wireless technologies will be assessed specifically in how it impacts rural subscription, network deployment, application suite requirements and technology choices over the long term.

Primary Questions Addressed in this Report Include:

  • What are the drivers and restraints for satellite-based backhaul equipment and services in each region of the globe?
  • Which wireless platform in each region represents the greatest potential?
  • What is the role of satellite backhaul currently and over the long term for each regional market?
