US demand to grow 3.8% per year through 2009
Demand for wall coverings is projected to advance 3.8 percent annually from a weak 2004 base to $2.2 billion in 2009. Consump- tion has been negatively impacted for most of the last ten years, due to a variety of factors, including competition from paints and coatings, long term weakness in the wallpaper sector, a severe cyclical downturn in the manufac- tured housing sector and a weak nonresidential building market. Going forward, however, the basic demand fundamentals for wall coverings will be much improved. In particular, the manufactured housing sector will make a strong recovery, as will key segments of the nonresi- dential building industry. In addition, demand for wallpaper, which has suffered mightily over the last ten years, will finally bottom out and begin to rise once again.
Ceramic wall tile to remain top segment
Ceramic wall tile will remain the largest single component of wall cover- ings demand, accounting for 42 percent of the total in 2009. Consumption will benefit from increased building activity, although the key residential market will see some deceleration in growth, as residential building activity slows. Demand for ceramic wall tile is increasingly being satisfied by imports from lower labor cost countries, such as China.
Wallpaper to grow after long decline
Wallpaper demand will finally post positive gains, after years of decline brought about by competi- tion from paints and coatings. Consumption will benefit from changing consumer trends, improved marketing and the ongoing development of a wide range of new wallpaper products, such as wallpa- per that is easier to apply and remove, mold-resistant wallpaper and large-scale "mural" and "couture" wallpapers.
Finished gypsum board to ride on manufactured housing recovery
Demand for finished gypsum board products will also post strong gains from a weak 2004 base. These products, used almost exclusively in the manufac-tured housing industry, suffered from the severe downturn in manufactured housing shipments during the 1999-2004 period. However, now that manu-factured housing is ex-pected to regain positive growth momentum, de-mand for finished gypsum board will benefit.
Wall panels to benefit from non-residential building
In wall panels, demand will benefit from the recovery in key nonresidential building markets, such as the office and commercial and industrial sectors. As long-delayed construction activity is undertaken, demand for simulated and real wood grain panels will expand. Growth will also benefit from continuing new product development.
