Abstract
Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma (DSP) is a research-based pharmaceutical company, headquartered in Osaka, which has resulted from the merger of Dainippon Pharmaceutical (which acts as the surviving company) and Sumitomo Pharmaceutical (a division of Sumitomo Chemical). This report provides a full review of the company's activities together with sales forecasts for key products to 2010.
In the first nine months of fiscal 2005, Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma's net sales rose by 5.6% compared to the same 2004 period, to ¥ 84.7 billion. Net income rose by 51.6% to ¥ 4 billion, whilst operating income rose by 113% to ¥ 9.0 billion.
R&D Pipeline Overview
- Lonasen is an antipsychotic that features a completely innovative chemical structure because of its potential to block both dopamine D2 and 5-HT2 receptors. It is awaiting approval in the US.
- Zonisamide has been filed in the US for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, and is in late stage Phase III trials for this indication in Japan.
- AS-3201 is currently in Phase III trials in the US and Canada and Phase IIa trials in Japan for diabetic neuropathy. A preliminary agreement has been signed with Kyorin Pharmaceutical related to the joint development and co-marketing of the product in Japan.
- AC-3933 is a benzodiazepine receptor inverse agonist with a novel mechanism of action that is expected to improve memory loss. Phase IIa trials have been completed in Europe in tablet formulation and it is under preparation for Phase IIa trials in the US.
