Abstract
Operating in the three sectors of Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals and Plastics, Solvay is represented worldwide. This report provides a full review of the company' s activities together with sales forecasts for key products to 2010.
Operating in the three sectors of Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals and Plastics, Solvay is represented worldwide. Over 95 per cent of its sales come from outside Belgium and 49 per cent from outside the European Union.
Current Growth Drivers
Following the acquisition of Fournier Pharma, Solvay' s flagship product and principal growth driver is now fenofibrate, a treatment for lipidic disorders which is sold as Tricor in the US and Lipanthyl elsewhere. It has already achieved blockbuster status and life-cycle development should further increase sales substantially. Dualtis, a fixed-dose combination of fenofibrate and metformin was filed in the EU in July 2006 and if approved, it would be the first product on the market that combines a lipid-lowering drug with an oral antidiabetic in one tablet; Fournier is conducting Phase III trials with Zolip (fenofibrate+statin) for dyslipidaemia (launch scheduled for 2010); and a next-generation fenofibrate, HEXA/ABT335, is undergoing Phase III trials. As a result, the Cardiometabolic therapeutic area is set to become the company' s most significant in terms of sales.
Other growth drivers include: the male hormone product, Androgel, which has been Solvay' s top-selling product for a number of years; the neuroscience products, Marinol (dronabinol) and Serc (betahistine); the influenza vaccine, Influvac; the pancreatic enzyme, Creon; and Teveten (eprosartan mesylate) for hypertension.
Pipeline Analysis
Following the integration of Fournier Pharma, Solvay Pharmaceuticals is selectively reorganising its portfolio, with Cardiometabolics and Neurosciences as its new primary fields. In these areas it intends to sustain and build on its market leadership, and obtain new products through in-licensing and acquisitions.
